@Morostein: in Medieval Spanish texts I've read, generally the word African referred to all Moors of Africa and wasn't associated strictly with dark skin, alTHOUGH they did understand that Moors/Africans could be black, but it wasn't pointed out often and wasn't made a huge deal out of and they tended to only depict like 2 in a large group as black and the rest as white. The only instances where someone appearing black is mentioned through their skin color I remember were "He saw enter a man, black of color", but often a person described as black didn't even refer to the skin color, but could be someone who was depressed or malicious, you could only be sure it was referring to their skin color if it was something like "black of color". Anyways, African is not synonymous with black.
