All the former republics took decades to even regain 1991 economy (except Ukraine which never in its history recovered economically from the USSR collapse). Central Asia has worse censorship than during the Soviet Union. Turkmeferretn literally has its own internet with blocked off access to the outside world like North Korea. Collapse of USSR ended several centuries of peace and prosperity for the whole region and you've got to be a fool to admire that.
