I have studied the Cantigas de Santa Maria so much that I learned Old Galician from them, in them the Moors tend to be depicted as white often but not always, occasionally they are depicted as black and most rarely they are depicted as brownCorrect, amazing book btw I use the paintings in it to debunk the delusional African American larpersShow quoted text

Yeah but the Moors were never black, the only blacks you can see in these paintings were slaves from West Africa used by the Almohads and Almoravids during military campaigns, the Moors are either brown or white, you cannot be black and be an ethnic MoorI have studied the Cantigas de Santa Maria so much that I learned Old Galician from them, in them the Moors tend to be depicted as white often but not always, occasionally they are depicted as black and most rarely they are depicted as brownShow quoted text

The texts of the songs did identify certain people as Moors and depict them as black, but it is likely that these were slaves or descendants of slavesYeah but the Moors were never black, the only blacks you can see in these paintings were slaves from West Africa used by the Almohads and Almoravids during military campaigns, the Moors are either brown or white, you cannot be black and be an ethnic MoorShow quoted text

Especially since the ones that are depicted as black are most often doing more of the dirty work

Sure and I have no problem with that, there were a minority of blacks in the Moorish armies, probably 5%, but I'll never let an African American or even a Subsaharan claim our history because it's just not theirsEspecially since the ones that are depicted as black are most often doing more of the dirty work
For example, this manuscript describes a scene where "Company of Moors arrived there, that came from Africa to raid Spain, and they kidnapped him quickly and with much fury and stuck him in the ship, may God help him!" and within context it is about a hermit in Portugal that was kidnapped by Moors that arrived there.Show quoted text

As you can see, the Moors that stay in the ship are depicted as pale and the ones taking the hermit are depicted as black and now that you mention it, that may be an intentional detail
For those wondering about it being said that they're raiding Spain from Africa while in Portugal, that's not contradictory, Spain before being a nation was a geographical term that described the whole Iberian peninsula including the Kingdom of Portugal and the Emirate of Granada as well
Correct, it shows that they were used as cannon fodders, during the wars they were always sent to the front line. That painting in particular was probably during the Almohad era.For example, this manuscript describes a scene where "Company of Moors arrived there, that came from Africa to raid Spain, and they kidnapped him quickly and with much fury and stuck him in the ship, may God help him!" and within context it is about a hermit in Portugal that was kidnapped by Moors that arrived there.Show quoted text

friendly fire bro
I mean I'm proud of my genes but the Castilians are still my enemiesfriendly fire bro
For example, in one of the later Cantigas it is written "Let's pray to her who has good graces from her Son, that she may give us great force so that we expel the Moors from Spain" and in a different one it has "To war against the Moors of Spain and the Africans" which does mean that Granada would be considered part of the geographical region of Spain at this time. These Cantigas are clearly against the Moors but they do present the Moors in a very accurate manner, and in a better light than the Jews are presented. For those wondering about it being said that they're raiding Spain from Africa while in Portugal, that's not contradictory, Spain before being a nation was a geographical term that described the whole Iberian peninsula including the Kingdom of Portugal and the Emirate of Granada as well
