It also probably has nothing to do with pagan celebrations as Christians wanted to separate themselves from paganism. IIRC The date of dec 25th is based on an early calculation and a belief that prophets are conceived on the same month they die or something, but I don't know if that has any basis

Many dates for celebrations in Christianity overlay pagan ones for a reason. In the east, Christian (later Orthodox) monks made sure to replace every pagan Slavic god with a Christian saint and the date of these celebrations always matched. You should know that the only only reason why christmas in on the 25th of december, is because early christians thought that jesus died in the same day he was conceived (march 25th), count forward 9 months and you get december 25th
