TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's bestiality law only bans sexual acts that involve penetration, the country's Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, a blow to advocacy groups who argued animals should be afforded the same protection from exploitation that humans are given.
Supreme Court judges ruled 6-1 in favor of a man from British Columbia in western Canada convicted for sexual assault and bestiality after he involved the family dog in the abuse of his two stepdaughters.

Ottawa cannot give a timeline for when it intends to re-criminalize bestiality, saying simply "it is something we'd like to get done."
Last year, the Supreme Court of Canada threw out a bestiality charge against a man, agreeing with his lawyers that Canada's bestiality laws were rooted in the antiquated notion of buggery - the same law formerly used to criminalize homosexuality - and did not include oral sex.

Kingston police say two residents have been charged with bestiality and animal endangerment after graphic images and video were found on cellphones during an unrelated drug investigation.
Police said over the last month, investigators were looking through the contents of cellphones that were seized in a drug-related investigation. Police allege they discovered material that "depicted various sexual acts involving the co-accused's dog."
That led investigators to identifying two suspects, police said.
A 32-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were arrested on Friday, police said, adding the man was already facing charges for possession for the purpose of trafficking and proceeds of crime.
