Several animal types, mostly mollusks, crustaceans, and arachnids have blue blood because they use a copper-based protein called hemocyanin instead of iron-based hemoglobin to carry oxygen. The reason why it is blue is because human blood is red because iron in hemoglobin reflects red light. Blue blood is blue because copper in hemocyanin reflects blue light when oxygen binds to it.
