Nine experienced hikers died under unexplained circumstances on a ski trek across the Northern Urals. Their inadequately dressed bodies were found on the slopes of Kholat Syakhl mountain about 1.5 km (0.93 mi) away from their tent, which was cut open from the inside and abandoned along with equipment and supplies. The official investigation found no evidence of foul play and determined that six of the hikers died from hypothermia, while the other three sustained fatal physical trauma. Inexplicable injuries, traces of radiation on victims' clothing, and reports of bright burning objects in the sky have led to much speculation about the exact nature of the incident.
