My rating of deltarune chapters
I played and beat the game. These are my sincere thoughts about deltarune.
Chapter 1:
Gameplay: This is kind of like undertale 2 in terms of gameplay, it's not too complex. As I think undertale is pretty much characterized by doing occasional puzzles in the overworld and having frequent battles, chapter 1 did the formula really well, I would even say better than undertale. There is finally some kind of challenge to the puzzles on my first playthrough, which is good as most undertale puzzles felt like a joke. Battles are also way more satisfying to do because of the graze and tp mechanic, also less boring with the different spells you can do now , plus rude buster is peak vgm. Boss fights are really epic too and make me hyped up throughout. My only disappointment is that card castle felt too short. 8.7/10
Art: It looks pretty ugly because of how many spaces are left pitch black, but light world backgrounds are a huge improvement from undertale. The animation is pretty choppy but I mean it's a retro looking game so I don't mind. 6.5/10
Music: Absolute cinema. Might even be better than undertale. 9.3/10
Writing: All of the characters are pretty likeable. I like how none of them are annoying, although lancer make me cringe sometimes. Everyone important has a character arc in the game, and the dialogue they say felt so real, like you're actually meeting them. The npc's dialogue also made a pretty good effort to make the dark world feel like an actual society, a real place. I was very immersed. 8.5/10
Overall Rating: If this was a standalone game with no follow ups I would pretty much accept it. This was so good. 8.25/10
Chapter 2:
Gameplay: I liked it better than chapter 1. The mercy meter is a good addition as it made everything less confusing. The way to access the secret boss is also much more complex. The formula is still the same as chapter 1, just with more frequent enemy encounters, so it's still good. Speaking of enemies, I like how beating them using acts actually requires the use of my brain. I like how everything actually starts to get some difficulty to play through instead of being piss easy like undertale. Area lengths are more balanced, with each longer than the last if you attempt the secret boss. The minigames are pretty cool too. 9/10
Art: It's definitely the best I've seen so far obviously, I like how the backgrounds are way more lively. The colors are also very pleasing, unlike chapter 1 where it feels desolate because of the dark, cold colors with huge amounts of black spaces. The animation also improved a bit. The only thing I don't like is how the basement in queen's mansion suddenly changed to a very poorly drawn, undetailed art style compared to the rest of the game. 9.1/10
Music: Actually, chapter 1's music was better honestly. It's still good though. 8.3/10
Writing: Even though the story's pacing is the same as chapter 1, I feel like its tone started to be less serious. Compared to the pretty realistic dialogue of chapter 1 that kept me invested, this one felt like it overdid the quirky internet humor. I hate that. It makes the game so unserious, even cringe as one point before becoming more serious than chapter 1, like lore dumping about the ROARING right after I fought queen as a duck and watching berdly's shenanigans. I wasn't prepared for such big changes in tone, so it didn't hit me as hard as chapter 1's lancer jail fight and the king fight, where the unseriousness before it isn't as egregious. Also, sweet capn cakes is corny, even annoying. I don't know why they get so much focus as they barely have any personality. K. round, what I think is the counterpart of these characters in chapter 1, gets way less attention. Susie is also suddenly a different person, after the incident yesterday she just stopped all of her tuff badass traits and acted like she knew kris for 10+ years, which is pretty jarring. Though I like how the parts with kris and noelle showed their lore and dynamic pretty effectively, as they seem to be presented through events and not through dialogue spam. Queen and berdly are also chads, and spamton might be the one character that got me the most invested in this game because of his personality and lore implications. He provides so much hype. If it isn't for him, I might have forgotten chapter 2 when chapter 3 and 4 released. These three characters carry the chapter so much. But overall the writing isn't as good as chapter 1, though I still enjoyed it. 6.9/10
Overall Rating: It almost 1-upped chapter 1 multiple times in every category except for writing. But it's still very consistent. 8.33/10
Chapter 3:
Gameplay: What the fuck is this? Where did all of the undertale formula go in this chapter? Given how the chapter takes place in kris's house you thought it would be appropriate for us to explore the dark world inside it, like the couch cliffs in the start suggests. No, toby now has an addiction with subverting expectations once the feedback of the weird route before made him nuts. I am now playing a stupid game with dogshit graphics for over half the chapter. So called puzzles now take up the majority of the gameplay, instead of peacefully coexisting with the rpg battles. Now the normal rpg battles is merely reduced to like, less than 10 minutes in the zelda portions. You know what I fucking expected when tenna announced a game show for us to be in? I expect him taking us to different parts of the living room to host a different game in each part, each section having characters and settings from different genres of shows that I can fight and interact with. Yes, you get different genres of shows in the actual thing but they are minigames that last for 2 minutes and require no skill to beat. It also has nothing to do with rpgs. The weather couple has a cool design so I thought you would get to fight them in their own dedicated area, but instead they are forced into the game out of absolutely nowhere. This is such wasted potential. I do like the final tv world segment that actually allows us to play the game with its usual formula for once, but it ended right as it started. I know there is a secret game that lets you get the fabled "SHADOW MANTLE" to survive against the notorious ROARING KNIGHT, but it is locked behind a random door which needs an S-rank to access, and for poor, braindead, mentally disabled idiots like me, if you fuck up on getting the S-rank once, there is no chance of retrying to unlock it. Secret bosses in the past have you unlock them through interacting with shopkeepers and discovering secrets through gathering vague hints from them, which is enjoyable as it's like putting some puzzle pieces together. In this, the way to the secret boss is blatantly in front of you. And you don't get to access it if you fail at the game show. Genocide route grinding is unironically less boring than this. I am also not invested in getting to the secret boss if this is how you unlock it. Through playing well in some repetitive, boring games. 3/10
Art: It's insanely good for the parts where you aren't stuck in the 8 bit game, maybe on par with chapter 2, but unfortunately you are stuck in thr 8 bit game for the majority of the chapter. It's still good though. 6.5/10
Music: Somehow, only two of them are memorable, being tenna's boss theme and the roaring knight's boss theme. 7/10
Writing: It is bad. I thought the quirkyness in chapter 2 is still kinda appropriate given how it takes place in the internet, but this takes the quirkyness in chapter 2 and doubles down, making every dialogue box actually start to be physically painful to read for once. Tenna is a massive schizo manchild who is somehow even more deranged than spamton. He spouts nonsense in every line and expects me to laugh. With the animated text in different fonts, it is obvious that he is made for clipfarming. However, he fails at this and just comes of as forced and irritating whenever he makes a bullshit "joke". I have no recollection of any of his lines except one (OH! YOU WILL! YOU тнгℹ️⏸️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️), which might be a good thing, because I almost cringe to death whenever he speaks or later, appears because of my extreme fear of him damaging my already rotted brain further at that point. Fanmade predictions' depictions of tenna is way better than whatever we got. At least tenna in those acts like an actual tv host insteas of a deranged asylum escapee. His "personality" and other cringe inducing bits of dialogue make serious moments now feel jarring and blatantly forced into the game. I stopped taking the game seriously by the end of the chapter. The knight reveal also felt way less impactful than loredrops in earlier chapters. The chapter is also a massive nothingburger. Again, given this chapter takes place in kris's house, you would probably expect lore about kris and asriel and maybe dess's past hidden in the chapter while exploring the different areas inside the house. Fuck you. You need to trust the process, chud. Robert Fuchs, our master will certainly deliver and subvert our expectations even more wildly in chapter 7B, you impatient larper. Therefore, the entire chapter in terms of lore is a massive nothingburger except for what the knight looks like. But if you delete this chapter and make the knight introduced in chapter 4, absolutely nothing will be changed. The main characters are also less competent, as susie actually stayed for the game show, the same susie that told ralsei to fuck off and head to the fountain by herself a whopping two days ago. Ralsei has a grand total of zero memorable moments in the chapter too. This chapter is entirely filler and the dialogue is painful to read. I don't know why it dropped in quality so drastically. 2/10
Overall Rating: This is one of the biggest letdowns in my nine-year life. 4.63/10

ittle in this chapter with climbing parts overshadowing them. I wish the darkness mechanics was used more, especially in battle. It's kind of underused with only about 3 battles needing them. But then the climbing parts are cool though. The game also started to feel less linear, though all forks in the path still lead to pretty unimportant things. Not much to say about the gameplay overall since this chapter focuses more on cutscenes. 6.5/10
Art: It is the best the game has done so far. Though I wish all three sanctuary areas have different looks because seeing almost the same area settings the whole chapter seems pretty uninteresting. But then when there is unique art shown in the chapter it is absolute cinema. The shaders also don't look good. 8/10
Music: Better than the last definitely. This one's soundtrack is on par with chapter 2, though I think chapter 1 still had the best soundtrack. 7.3/10
Writing: This one starts to get serious. It is way better than the last one obviously. I finally get the lore drops I desperately wanted, even though it's not as much as I expected, but I'm still satisfied, and it gives me a good amount of theorizing chances though not as exciting as spamton. But then, after the unseriousness is taken to an extreme last chapter, this one also takes seriousness to an extreme, so extreme that I start to feel kind of weird, experiencing the full prophecy, the knight's active confrontation of the characters, susie, snapping, the titan being made, ralsei having a mental breakdown in rapid succession along with rapidly rising stakes with no time of breathing after watching ha ha funny jackenstein typing quirk. If I'm toby I would use chapter 1's style of building the atmosphere of the area and personality of characters through occasional cutscenes (e.g. Field/board/forest lancer encounters) before letting them reach the emotional climax (lancer and susie boss fight) to make you feel genuine connection to the story instead of spamming emotional moments every room like chapter 4. The pacing of this chapter is also really weird, as the light world part and the first dark sanctuary are very long, which I appreciate, and then the 2nd and 3rd sanctuary sections are crammed in like half an hour. I would definitely like to see how susie's dark world is different to the knight's one, it's pretty underexplored to me. Also gerson alone carries the entire chapter to peak again despite the things I don't like, though I wish we got more than one main character in the dark world. 6.7/10
Overall Rating: It's not bad. It certainly made me regain my hope for the game at least, though the dark world part is really short, which is a bit of a disappointment. It looked fantastic. 7.13/10
Chapter 5:
Gameplay: It's honestly the best gameplay the game has. Every gameplay feature I wished toby added into the game is added, like forks in pathways, or more activity in overworld instead being a walking simulator like undertale. They finally made it interesting to play with the platforming. The climbing is also more enjoyable and used more frequently than in chapter 4, despite chapter 4 supposedly having climbing to be way more important to the plot, but I won't complain. Exploration is finally a thing in the game instead of you walking in a very linear path in past chapters. It is way more fun to play overall, though the battles are still not as frequent as it is in chapters 1 and 2, if their frequency is as balanced as the frequency of the parts with newly added mechanics it would be the best chapter gameplay wise. Mew mew being a secret boss is so far my biggest criticism in this chapter though, because it has absolutely nothing to do with it and is blatantly forced into it like the chapter being japan themed. A red flower boss fight would be less jarring and be a more effective parallel to kris. As the last secret boss, this seems like a joke. I used quite a few hours to beat it, which is roughly the same time used to be jevil, but this felt like triple the length and is actual mental torture compared to jevil because I had to constantly listen to that thing making gut wrenching noises every attack paired with the most cringe inducing dialogue that runs for multiple boxes that is worse than flowery, which constantly reminds me that mew mew, in fact, is an old nutjob wearing an innocent, sentient skinsuit pretending to be a schoolgirl. It is disgusting to think about, let alone thinking about it for hours. At least jevil's dialogue and sounds are funny. But because mew mew is an optional fight, I won't make it impact the score that much because it will not be fair. 9/10
Art: I don't like how most area's art and themes are reused. The garden should have the marsh part be the majority of its theme, that looks so fucking good. The cliffs look suspiciously similar to the final room in undertale, though it still looks very good. Flower castle is the only one that looks original here. It also has the best art in the entire game so I easily like this area a lot. The animation is also way smoother. If only toby would retroactively change the graphics in earlier chapters to be better after like chapter 7 releases, that would be cool. 7.1/10
Music: It's better than chapter 3 and 4 but not as good as chapter 1 and 2. At least most of the themes are catchy in a good way. 8/10
Writing: Fuck the writing. Chapter 3 is the lowest point the writing of this game has gotten, but chapter 5's writing isn't that good either. It clipfarms using a different method, not by introducing a schizoid manchild character that annoys you all the way through the chapter, but rather severely violating the character's personalities so much that they aren't even same character anymore as previous chapters. Susie is turned into a comic relief character that says random jokes who has no screen time other than that. Ralsei is now suddenly perpetually angry after being told to be himself once during the start. At least flowery is more tolerable than tenna, but his dialogue looks like something discord mods would say when trying to impress their kittens. It's unnatural and kinda tryhard. When he tries to be funny, he turns out annoying and when he tries to be tuff, he turns out cringe. I don't enjoy his presence. I thought queen was annoying before, but some of her jokes are still funny, like bosom. Flowery's only redeeming quality is that he doesn't have wild emotional swings like tenna. But this already doesn't save the destroyed personalities of susie and ralsei here. Their writing started to deteriorate since chapter 2, but this dropped them to near the bottom. I don't think I'm having my adventures with the same 2 characters as before anymore. Other than that, the other flowers as good, their personalities do stand out individually. But then given how asgore is some kind of conspiracy theorist, I'm disappointed in how barely any lore drops are given in this chapter, like chapter 3. We literally gain access of asgore's papers in the last area but the game just had to troll us by making them unreadable. The festival is also bullshit, because it being teased back as far as chapter 2 ends up having nothing interesting about it. We know nothing about the town's history from this. We unlock no new locations of the town from this. We gain absolutely no visitors from this. All we get is official confirmation that suselle is canon. It's underwhelming. So it's not bad but not good either I guess. 3.5/10
Overall Rating: Finally good gameplay after two chapters of having more gimmicks and cutscenes than actual playable parts, but I don't know how the fuck toby can wrap up the story in the remaining two chapters, even if chapter 7 is longer. The story is still a nothingburger though more important than chapter 3. 6.9/10
Final Rating: 7.05/10. I won't play it again or recommend it either. The story and gameplay is extremely inconsistent. When it's good, it's better than undertale but when it's bad it's extremely repulsive. I really don't know what to say but this game is probably the most difficult to rate because of how inconsistent it is. I probably rated too generously too.
