Microchimerism could create Chimeras. So, there was a story I heard about where a male zebra and female horse mated, but didn't produce offspring, but later when the female horse mated with another horse and gave birth it had zebra stripes. So if otherwise incompatible creatures can have DNA impact on the other when mated from the sperm giving DNA into their body, perhaps there could be Chimeras from this microchimerism? Such as Duck Flamingoes, or Rat Hamsters, or even cat dogs ? 
Maybe when they talked of Chimeras in ancient texts, they were talking about real creatures!
