it was really fun. such a breath of fresh air to watch something so sincerely weird. the special effects have really held up, i could only imagine what it had been like to watch something like the trench run for the first time in the theatres nearly half a century ago. the pacing was great, if a bit fast at some points. and each introduction to a new character or alien felt natural and cinematic; 8/10.
on to Empire Strikes Back.

on to Empire Strikes Back.

Attack of the Clones is a pretty huge improvement from Phantom Menace, and actually fixes a lot of the issues I had with the former film. The CGI is way better, like, drastically. There are some scenes, especially when the characters are standing in front of fake backgrounds, that the effects dont 100% sell it, but the digital characters look really good, maybe not great, but definitely better than Episode 1's. Even the ones that interact with human characters like Dexter Jettster, the Kaminoans, and the beasts during the execution. Speaking of the aliens, I love how diverse they all feel. You got the insectioid Geonosians, the shape-shifting assassin, the massive beasts, the Techno Union foreman in his pressure suit, even the weird balloon cow-looking thing that Anakin rides on (i looked it up, they're called "Shaaks"). The action scenes are also really great; the fight with the assassin on Coruscant at the start is probably one of the weakest ones, something about the environment feels hollow despite it taking place in what's supposed to be the literal biggest city in the galaxy. Pretty much everything involving Jango Fett is awesome. His fight with Obi-Wan on Kamino, the battle in the astroidfied; the sound design for this film is really damn good, but the seismic charge Jango uses might be one of the best sound effects i've ever heard, period. Also Jango is getting trampled by, then taking down that bull alien in one shot, so cool. Young Boba also being there adds a really interesting motive and depth for Jango. The Battle of Geonosis, both the ground assault and the jedi attack are great. The clones coming in at the end made a great impression after being set up earlier, and even if its convientent for the main characters, its a movie and it felt satisfying, thats all it needed. The fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin against Dooku kinda felt like a letdown. It felt like it was trying to do a big Empire Strikes Back final act defeat but the fight was just kinda meh and there wasnt any kind of big revelation; it was just: Dooku beats Anakin and Obi-Wan and Yoda shows up and they fight, and Dooku runs away. Dooku's force lightning wasnt really even used in a super cool way, he zapped Anakin and then Yoda and Obi-Wan just sort of deflected it with their lightsabers. On the topic of these characters, Hayden Christensen honestly owns this role. He has big senstive, young man energy and his internal clash wish... well everything, the Jedi Order, the Republic, Obi-Wan; its very edgy but he does the edge really well. His relationship with Padme didn't bother me as much as I thought it would when it first started. Theres some corny dialouge, that goes for a lot of Anakins line but the two of them sort of make it work? like they have really good natural chemistry on screen that really I was only bothered by it when the scenes with them would conflict tonally with whatever scene came before and after them. I'm happy at how limited Jar Jar is, he's actually pretty tolerable in this movie. Dooku is pretty cool; a rogue, disillusioned Jedi who, while serving an evil manipulator wants to see genuine change for the better in the galaxy. I love his smugness, Christopher Lee is great in the role. The writing is a lot better, more characters express and talk in their own ways, unlike the Phantom Menace, which has alot of sort of samey dialouge. I was not expecting Anakin to kill an entire tribe of Tusken Raiders. fucking raw dude. This film was pretty raw. I really liked it. 8/10. I'd say its either #4 or #3, fighting with RotJ, with #2 being A New Hope and #1 Empire.

Looking back at my thoughts on Attack of the Clones, I've realized that I was really, really positive, even more than my reviews of A New Hope and Empire; yet I still rank those 2 above Attack of the Clones. I think this is because subconsciously, I was still recognizing that even with all the cool fluff, the movie has a lot of the same structural issues as Phantom Menace. I really focused on the things I really liked at first: the cool fights, interesting ideas, great worldbuilding. But storywise, it is weak, lacks the cohesion of the aforementioned movies, and many of the important characters lack momentum for me to truly care for them. Theres a lot of great scenes, but not many of them focus on the characters. There are things that should be huge deals that get addressed throughout the film, Anakin slaughtering the Tusken Raiders for example, but he sort of just has a cry over it, Padme comforts him, and then the movie just moves on. Nothing the movie really gets that chance to be processed by the characters, things just have to move forward for the next big setpiece to occur. A New Hope has a similar structure where things are constantly moving forward, but there are still small moments where characters are allowed interact and form those bonds naturally on screen; Luke, Obi-Wan, and Han get to talk on the Millennium Falcon and establish their relationships moving forward. The closest we have to that in Attack of the Clones is the scenes between Anakin and Padme. I think I was too generous to give it an 8/10, definetly a 7/10 overall.
