Here’s the core idea:
To send something from Earth to the Sun, you don’t just “shoot it straight down.” The Earth is already moving around the Sun at about 30 km/s, so the object inherits that sideways speed. To fall into the Sun, you actually need to cancel that orbital velocity.

Minimum speed change (Δv)


You’d need roughly 30 km/s of velocity change in the opposite direction of Earth’s motion.

Energy required


Kinetic energy needed:

Plugging in m=60 kgm=60kg, v≈30,000 m/sv≈30,000m/s:
E≈0.5×60×(30,000)2≈2.7×1010 JE≈0.5×60×(30,000)2≈2.7×1010J
That’s about 27 billion joules, roughly equivalent to 6–7 tons of TNT.

Why a slingshot won’t work


A mechanical slingshot would be completely impractical:

  • Materials would fail long before storing that much energy
  • Air resistance at those speeds would cause extreme heating
  • The acceleration would be enormous—far beyond survivable limits for any living thing

Even rockets struggle with this. In fact, spacecraft sent toward the Sun (like Parker Solar Probe) don’t fire directly inward—they use gravity assists from planets (like Venus) to gradually reduce their orbital speed.

i don’t think there’s a material elastic enough to be able to draw back as far as you would need to in order to get that much energy
