However, in the heart of our majestic Andes, our wise ancestors achieved the impossible: Monumental architecture without cement, without steel, and one that has withstood earthquakes for 600 years! Today, we proudly celebrate the unparalleled brilliance of the engineering of the Inca Empire. The of Mortar Unlike many ancient constructions around the world, the Incas didn't use any kind of glue. The immense stones of their walls fit together with such absolute, millimeter-perfect precision that there is exactly 0mm of mortar between them. Not even a needle could fit! It is a demonstration of monumental stone carving that, even today with advanced technology, remains fascinating. Angles and Stone Colossi Each block is an individual work of art, made entirely of stone. Our ancestors moved and carved colossal rocks, some reaching 5.5 meters in height and weighing over 100 tons. But the true genius lies in their design: Each block was carved with between 6 and 12 angles. This geometric complexity allowed the stones to interlock perfectly, creating an indestructible structural network. Dancing Stones: The Magic of Earthquake Resistance. Peru is a land of high seismic activity, and the Incas understood this perfectly. Their architecture was not designed to offer rigid resistance, but to flow with the force of Pachamama (Mother Earth). Thanks to the absence of mortar and their multiple interlocking angles, during an earthquake the stones literally move and then return to their original positions, this is the least talked about aspect of my ancestors; it surprises me that no one mentions how architectures like Machu Picchu withstood so much time.
