No islands are very expensive to live in because you have to ship everything from outside.
Depends on the size of the island and if the island sustains itself, Puerto Rico used to sustain itself under Spain and under early US rule but with industrialization, the agriculture and aristocracy were displaced and a huge amount of products and food are now shipped from the US to here rather than being locally sourced.
