FIREFOX ADDED A FEATURE THAT GIVES YOUR DATA TO THE CIA (PROBABLY)

My browser has a FREE embedded VPN option which is keyed but they made the icon bigger recently, like they're trying to make you wanna click it.
NOW, before you say 'hey, free VPN? That sounds great!', let me tell you a few things I've noticed about `fox:
<--
They recently removed a clause from their FAQ stating:
"Does Firefox sell your personal data? Nope. Never have, never will.
And we protect you from many of the advertisers who do.
Firefox products are designed to protect your privacy.
That’s a promise."
<--
Then, after, they opened this brand new, free of charge VPN with a (very generous) 50GB monthly data limit.
Now the source code for Firefox is open source, meaning that if they DID farm your data through the web browser, you would see it. So a lot of people thought this change was a nothing burger, and they might start to monetise differently in the future.
<--
WELL, now we have this VPN option, which is SEPARATE from the web browser, and we have no idea what happens in the background with that. My theory is that they farm data from people who connect to the vpn. Now do they sell this data? Who knows. But they ARE allowed to share your data.
<--
After checking with ai (because no I'm not reading privacy agreements for the sake of a post on the snarky snappy) it says they CAN'T log browser activity (YET), but what THEY DO log is:
1) Your email attatched to the account
2) your ip
3)your OS and device you're using (likely including hardware identifiers)
4)How much data you use and on what day (less malicious but still data they can use to identify you)
The VPN feature isn't promoted to be 'anti-surveillance' or 'privacy focused' and simply started existing one day. (HIGHLY CONCERNING)
<--
My OpSec philosophy is complicated and not worth summarising but one part I focus on alot with what services I use is 'can the government subpoena information about me from the company that owns this service?'. This is why alot of VPN's are actually bullshit. If they log your data, the government can request that data and look at all the sites you've used.
This is a major flaw with this free VPN. Now they don't sell the data, but now there's now an embedded identification vector for your local government to use if they ever catch one of these VPN ip's browsing a site they deem visitors to be people of interest.
<--
I would never ever use this VPN unless you're only trying to hide your browsing activity from your boss or someone monitoring your internet access. Outside from that? This is probably one of the least private VPN’s currently available. I wouldn't willingly use this even if I didn't have a VPN.
< >
(my motivation for this post was because they made the 'CONNECT TO VPN' button 3 times bigger. Why the fuck would they do that if it's meant to be a free service? Why would they WANT more people using it unless they are hungry for your data? )

I will add that I have NO idea if traffic routes through the Firefox VPN first or whatever VPN you're currently using, so it's not unlikely that you can get ratted EVEN IF you have a VPN on yourself.
I would imagine that data within the browser gets handled by the browser's VPN first but I'm not versed well enough in networking to understand how to even test this out.
So don't use this, ever.
<---
Embedded browser VPN's sound pretty gemmy and consumer friendly though, so I wouldn't criticise other browsers who might do this. It's just because of weird company decisions Mozilla has made recently that made me question the sanctity of this new feature.

I'd write a guide for picking out a good VPN but it's pretty simple:

  • If they log your data don't buy it
  • If they're based in the US don't buy it
  • If they promote the use of services like TOR don't buy it (there are exceptions USE YOUR BRAIN)
  • If they love sponsoring your favourite content creator then be thorough with your investigation into the company behind it

I've been following this since they announced it two months ago.
They also have a paid plan with no data caps so the motive could be to upsell that. Still dubious though since 50GB is very generous as you said.

Why's this a red flag? Mullvad and AirVPN both make a big deal about having hidden service mirrors for their sites and they're my favourite VPN providers.

It's actually a proxy despite the branding IIRC so the flow would be: Your internet connection => System VPN => Firefox VPN => Websites.

My vpn also has TOR services available which is what I think would be a valid exception, if they were selling this specific function just as an extra feature.
My concern would be with VPN's that base their philosophy around 'anonymity' rather than privacy, or being 'made for tor' or similar. That would make me suspicious enough to not consider their service at all.

Good to know, thank you. Do you think that stacking this ontop of your vpn would be good OpSec then? Or do you think letting the free firefox VPN know which VPN you like to use and which nodes you frequent would contribute to identifying you? Lets say they are in-fact building a case on every user of the service

Selling a vpn that only works inside a browser sounds.... unprofitable.
Maybe someone would buy this but it doesn't sound consumer friendly
