I started a home automation project for my dog with dementia whom passed away a couple of years back. I have set up something called "Project Gladivs" which is a conglomeration of servers that is supposed to replace centralized services and automate the house. What i have set up is Home Assistant, Pi-Hole, Kodi, OpenWRT, TrueNAS, WireGuard, Jellyfin, ZoneMinder and FTP, it is all integrated into home assistant. My hallway lights are still automated for the dog using Zigbee, which is a mesh networking protocol for home devices like light bulbs, switches and other knacks you find around the house. Everyone in the house switched to Linux and uses some of the services i have set up for ease of use and everyone is happy that i have blocked ads using a DNS server (Pi-Hole), i also have cameras that connect to ZoneMinder and use built in threat detection AI and i use WD CCTV-Grade hard drives that can withstand constant R/W cycles. I also use 4x8TB NAS-Grade hard drives configured in a RAIDZ2 configuration with ZFS. None of the drives have any errors yet. I can access all this via wireguard too. All this started because i wanted to help my dog with dementia!
